What is Musculoskeletal First Contact Physiotherapy?
Musculoskeletal First Contact Physiotherapy is an NHS service that provides direct access to specially trained physiotherapists who can assess, investigate, and diagnose musculoskeletal problems. If you’re experiencing back pain, neck pain, or joint pain, this service offers a faster route to getting the answers and treatment you need.
What our service offers:
- Expert assessment and diagnosis – Our specially trained physiotherapists can properly assess and diagnose a wide range of musculoskeletal problems including back pain, neck pain, and joint pain
- Comprehensive investigations – We can order necessary investigations such as X-rays to help with your diagnosis
- Specialist referrals – If needed, we can refer you directly to hospital specialist clinics for further treatment
- Quick access – Appointments are typically available within 2 weeks
- Flexible appointments – We offer face-to-face appointments at the Waldron, or telephone assessments when more suitable
- Patient satisfaction – Our service receives positive feedback from patients
Important to know:
- We do not provide physiotherapy treatment courses – these would be arranged separately if needed. This is an assessment and diagnosis service.
- We do not see patients under 16 years of age
- We do not see problems related to women’s health, antenatal and postnatal problems

- You can contact your GP surgery to ask to be booked into an appointment with this service, they may ask you for more information about the problem before they book you in
